Do You Know Where Your CBD Comes From?

Isolate your Risk

We built GenCanna to provide a safe, scalable, sustainable supply of premium CBD. Quality and safety have been the bedrock of our company since the outset. We built the GenCanna Production Platform™ (GPP) because of our stubborn focus on manufacturing high quality cannabis at true global scale.

We have growing concern over the current CBD isolate market. We have come to learn that there are many fraudulent brokers and re-sellers of CBD isolate misrepresenting their product as GenCanna isolate.

We certainly are concerned about the commercial implications of bad actors hurting our brand and bottom-line. But, this is not our primary concern. Our primary concern is for consumers.

Our significant investment in quality starts with an understanding that if you are not producing CBD isolate at the international food safety standards that mature food and nutraceutical companies currently meet, then you are placing your consumers at risk.  If you are a brand sourcing your isolate from an unaccredited supplier who does not meet these standards — you are placing your customers at risk. This stance is not only ours, but has been expressed by former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in his Washington Post op-ed.

Our mounting concerns are driven by hemp producers that purchase isolate that was produced without their oversight, isolate acquired from international sources, and isolate not derived from federally compliant hemp producers.

ISOLATE PRODUCED WITHOUT OVERSIGHT

We are committed to farming the right way. Our proprietary hemp genetics are grown using organic practices on U.S. Hemp Authority accredited farms, free from pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Our Certified Farming Network™ operates legally under state and federal regulations for industrial hemp production, processing and product manufacturing - and has since the 2014 Farm Bill (sec. 7606).

Hemp-derived products manufactured with inconsistent methods, lacking quality assurance and quality controls cannot guarantee consistent product quality. Purchasing biomass without continuous oversight during its growing process exposes customers to decisions made on the farm that may not necessarily be detected when receiving and testing the biomass. That’s why we visit our farms on a bi-weekly basis throughout the farming season, and even more regularly as we approach harvest. Kentucky is the natural home of hemp, and we’re proud to fill shelves across the world with hemp-derived products grown in fertile American soil.

ISOLATE FROM INTERNATIONAL SOURCES

Since 2014, we have understood that hemp is a crop like any other crop.  The 2018 Farm Bill reinforced this stance and created a path for commercialization that starts at the farm.  The bill and its intent is unambiguous; our hemp industry exists today to help American farmers farm.  CBD acquired from international sources is not only misaligned with the intent of the Farm Bill, but importation of floral material and its derivatives is not allowed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Beyond the legal implications, a perhaps greater concern is one of quality. CBD sourced from China and other nations often has byproduct and residual biological constituents that are harmful to consumers.

Our understanding that food has production standards — even when the input crops do not — is why we attained leading international food and supplement production standards. Our core production of hemp-derived CBD, vertically-integrated from farm to finished product, is based on the increasingly stringent quality assurance standards that modern food and nutraceutical companies follow.

The GenCanna Production Platform™ (GPP) is predicated on international food safety compliance standards that deliver reliable, consistent products at scale. With regulation and consumer protection policies still being developed, there are no controls in place to properly ensure quality — and legality — in products created from biomass imported from international sources.

ISOLATE NOT SOURCED FROM FEDERALLY COMPLIANT HEMP PRODUCERS

GenCanna is sanctioned and permitted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Industrial Hemp Pilot Program in accordance with Sec. 7606 of the 2014 Federal Farm Bill. Compliance in farming and production is not a marketing message — it is a federal requirement, and a core value of the GenCanna Production Platform™ (GPP). Federal guidelines do not label any pesticides for use on hemp crops. Sourcing material from unknown providers offers little certainty that federal guidelines have been followed by the grower. CBD isolate must be derived from federally legal hemp in state sanctioned programs, extracted from cannabis plants with less than 0.3% THC content.

While there is a window to generate quick margin from buying biomass and selling isolate, there is little assuredness over the quality of the isolate or its compliance with federal law. As regulation develops, we believe it will be necessary for federally compliant brands to source solely from compliant, scaled American hemp producers. This approach has been expressed by former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, Principal Associate Commissioner for Policy Lowell Schiller, and Principal Deputy Commissioner of Food and Drugs Dr. Amy P. Abernethy.
