In the News: June 2018
Celebrating Continued Growth
The month of June witnessed more landmark moments for GenCanna™ and the hemp industry as legislative progress pushed us closer to the full and final legalization of hemp and hemp-derived products. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell continued to champion the Farm Bill while fighting to ensure that all hemp language remains fully intact. Senator Grassley galvanized hemp supporters by challenging the foundation of the Hemp Farming Act, and the community responded with overwhelming support. From Kentucky to Tel Aviv, GenCanna™ leadership continued to share our message and innovations with new audiences, and we celebrated Hemp History Week with the opening of the new corporate headquarters in Winchester.
In The News
The Senate Farm Bill passed – and it includes all of the Hemp Farming Act language, including the permanent legalization of hemp and products such as hemp-derived CBD.
“The United States Senate has passed a 2018 Farm Bill. For farmers across Kentucky and the United States, there is no piece of legislation more important than this one. I am excited that this bipartisan measure includes Leader Mitch McConnell’s #HempFarmingAct, which will allow states to unleash the full economic potential of our industrial hemp pilot programs. #KyAg365”
-Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles
House Farm Bill Passes
The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the 2018 Farm Bill, after resolving an unrelated intra-party dispute about immigration. As expected, there are no significant hemp provisions in the bill.
FDA Approval Of Epidiolex
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved GW Pharmaceutical’s Epidiolex, a cannabidiol (CBD) oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two forms of epilepsy.
"The Roundtable applauds the FDA’s efforts to target bad actors in the industry who undermine legitimate hemp-derived products by making unproven claims. We look forward to working with federal and state agency officials through our continuing efforts to develop standards, best practices and a self-regulated organization (SRO) for the industry."
-US Hemp Roundtable
“You can get vitamin C from oranges at the grocery store, or you can get a clinical preparation of vitamin C to treat a disease, and those two items are treated very differently.”
-Chris Stubbs, Chief Science Officer, GenCanna™
Hemp Advocates Rally Against Grassley Amendment
In response to an amendment proposed by U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) which aimed to explicitly exclude “cannabinoids,” “extracts” and “derivatives” from the Farm Bill’s definition of hemp — meaning that popular products such as hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) may be treated by the DEA as a Schedule 1 controlled substance — hemp supporters from across the country spoke up. Using the U.S Hemp Roundtable’s online portal, advocates sent 23,453 emails to US Senators, flooding the internet with positivity and momentum for hemp. It worked. The Farm Bill passed out of the Senate Agriculture Committee, with the full Hemp Farming Act, with only one no vote!
