MILESTONES IN HEMP LEGISLATION
April was a month full of benchmark moments for the hemp industry and its supporters. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced groundbreaking legislation to finally and fully legalize industrial hemp — a bill that will bypass the traditional committee process and go directly to the full United States Senate. The U.S. Hemp Roundtable — of which GenCanna™ sits on the Board of Directors and President Steve Bevan serves as Secretary — continued its advocacy and industry stewardship by submitting formal comments to the FDA in support of the World Health Organization's initial determinations on hemp-derived CBD, and traveled to Washington D.C to speak to legislators about the impacts of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018. Back at home, GenCanna™ served as headline sponsor for the Kentucky Hemp Industries Association Annual Conference — a wonderful gathering of hemp industry leaders from around the region.
HEMP FARMING ACT OF 2018 INTRODUCED
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell formally introduced a bill on the Senate floor that would officially remove hemp from the Controlled Substances Act, allowing farmers to grow hemp as an agricultural product and businesses to sell its extracts, fiber and protein as agricultural commodities. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 not only legalizes hemp under U.S. federal law, it also opens hemp research and funding at the federal level, formally recognizes state and Native American Tribe regulation, and clarifies other issues like transportation and borders. Additionally, the proposed legislation offers a path to hemp crop insurance through USDA, providing a significant potential for greatly expanded farm production.
“Leader McConnell's continued advocacy for hemp is tremendous. Kentucky continues to drive the growth of the hemp industry thanks to our congressional leadership,” said GenCanna CEO Matty Mangone-Miranda, “Formally legalizing hemp and easing business restrictions around this new agricultural commodity will help American farmers farm, and continue to build on the $40M in economic impact GenCanna™ has delivered to our Kentucky home.”
LEADER MCCONNELL OP-ED
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell penned an op-ed in the Richmond Register detailing his position in support of hemp and his sponsorship of the groundbreaking Hemp Farming Act of 2018.
“For far too long, the federal government has prevented most farmers from growing hemp. Although it was a foundational part of Kentucky’s heritage and today you can buy products made with hemp at stores across the country, most farmers have been barred from planting it in their fields. I have heard from many Kentucky farmers who agree it’s time to remove the federal hurdles in place and give our state the opportunity to seize its full potential and once again become the national leader for hemp production. That’s why I was proud to introduce legislation in the Senate to finally and fully legalize industrial hemp.”
We are proud to support Leader McConnell and continue to support Kentucky farmers by bringing jobs and economic impact to our backyard.
